How to Measure Your Property For a Fence

Locate and Confirm Your Property Lines

The first thing you want to do is find out the exact location of your property lines. A plat or property map will help, but this is important. If the fence crosses your neighbor’s property, it might have to be taken down – a costly mistake. We may have a land surveyor check your property or consult county records to verify.

Southern Pro Fence Will Verify Your Measurements

The measurements you provide to us will help us provide you with an initial estimate, but before we begin work, we will ensure the accuracy of your measurements.

Check Local Zoning Codes & Restrictions

Some cities and HOAs have strict rules on fences. This may limit whether you are permitted a fence, but also the placement and style of your fence. They may apply for both backyard and front yard fencing. We are happy to help with this process, as well.

Check Carefully for Obstructions and Utility Lines

If you have trees or other permanent features, you need to plan around them. Is the fence going to go in front of them, behind them, or run near them? These obstructions can alter your measurements if you don’t wish to remove them. Slopes and contours can also affect your fence’s measurements. Make sure to account for the location of utility lines and other permanent obstructions on your property.

Mark and Measure Your Property

When Southern Pro Fence measures a yard, we follow these guidelines, and recommend you do the same when preparing your measurement for your initial estimate:

  1. We mark the corners with stakes. These are where panels meet at a 90-degree angle.
  2. We measure your property’s perimeter in feet.
  3. Remember to consider the gates. How many gates will you need?
  4. We then divide by the measurement of your fence panels. Most pre-cut fence panels are 6 or 8 feet in length. We’ll mark the posts between the panels. This step is not needed for our initial estimate.
  5. We then mark your end posts. This is where the fence ends, whether at a house, tree, or gate.
